MySQL Language and Character collation issues.
« Reply #1 on: August 01, 2008, 12:02:12 PM »
It is very helpful to keep in mind that character based comparisons can be drastically affected by the MySQL server.  This is particularly true in migration scenarios, but can affect new installations when the hosts MySQL server is of a more recent version than the development server.

Here are a few links I encountered while doing some research in this regard recently:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/charset-connection.html  reference to the charset connector documentation...

http://public.m-plify.net/mysql/MySQL_Charset_Handling.pdf  - hand drawn diagram which may be helpful..
