I always make sure that if it is a read-able document that it is in pdf for ease of use for the customer.  If it a group of documents you should probably put them in a folder and zip (compress) them so they take up much less space on the server (your host will love you for this).  Also in the file names, I have found that instead of having spaces in between the words, either eliminate the spaces all together in the file names, or use _ (underscores) where the spaces would be.  Here are the basic steps for listing an e-book or other electronic document in your cart:

1.)  After preparing the file(s) or zipped folder as mentioned above, upload it to your public_html/library folder using an ftp program such as filezilla using secure settings.

2.)  Under admin/file distribution use the new file scan

3.)  Once this is complete, click on the file you wish to add, and in the top right you will see an add button.  Click it

4.)  You will find yourself in a Library edit page, and you will see fields to imput the document's title, document description,  meta tag title, and meta tag description along with a field for keywords also set the availability up at the top to the appropriate setting depending on what you wish to do with the document.

5.)  Fill out the title and description, and the meta tag title and description fields.  The meta tag fields should mirror the regular title and description fields.  Fill in the keywords from the product description being careful not to duplicate any key words.

6.)  Go into your admin/catalog menu and add a new product.

7.)  Fill out the product title, description, meta tag and keyword fields just as you did in the FDMS.  Both the product listing in the FDMS and the listing in the catalog should contain the same information.  Set the product weight to 0, and don't forget to add the graphics for your product in the thumbnail, normal, and popup sections.

8.)  Go back into the FDMS and attach the file to the product listing, and that's it!

Daniel,

Thanks for posting this howto.

I myself use FDMS for executables and archived source code distributions.

While offering bundles as single archives can be handy, its equally nice to be able to offer free downloads such as documentation while still charging for the files which contain the actual product.
