eCommerce business in 2009's state of the economy
By Denver Prophit Jr of Strikehawk eCommerce Co.
eCommerce business in 2009 isn't without it's challenges. Record job losses, globally. Large banks and industries failing and cutting personnel in drastic numbers. Record number of Chapter 13 and 3 bankruptcy filings both home and abroad. ecommerce store owners must make radical changes and bust out of decades olds way oscommerce and creloaded have handled social marketing.
Savvy Online Shoppers turn to comparison sites to make better, informed choices.
No longer will online customers simply take your word that you have the best deal and the best price. Major online ventures now offer massive amounts of data to compare both the merchant's goods and services with retail prices with those whom offer something similarly based either on UPC code, Manufacturer's SKU, or ASBIN. How much effort have you put forth to provide this information about your goods and services? Chances are, based on current code releases of osCommerce and CRELoaded, you have nothing in place.
According to UPI, "This year's dramatic increase in the use of comparison shopping sites marks a new era in online shopping. Users are becoming more sophisticated in their online purchase behaviors, clearly demonstrating the willingness to use comparison shopping sites to find the best product at the best price," said Bill Tancer, vice-president of research at Hitwise." 1
Economic outlook for eCommerce business in '08 to '09
There is a silver lining in all this turmoil. According to eCommerce Guide "Still A Five-Percent Gain: Within its generally bleak market snapshot, comScore finds a few bright spots. Retailers have seen average daily spending of $643 million from Thanksgiving through Dec. 19, a 5 percent increase over last year. The past week was especially strong, accounting for four of the top 10 spending days this season. But with most retailers' offers of free shipping in time Christmas having expired, the heaviest online shopping days have likely come and gone. Dec. 9, a Tuesday, was the strongest day of the season, with online retailers posting revenues of $887 million. Last Monday, Dec. 15, checked in at No. 2, with $857 million in sales. Cyber Monday, the first Monday after Thanksgiving often cited as the kickoff to the online holiday shopping season, was the third-heaviest day for e-tailers with sales of $846 million, a healthy 15 percent increase of the same day in 2007. By category, the biggest gainers in December over last year were sports and fitness, books and magazines, and video games, consoles and accessories. In the same period, music, movies and videos were the biggest loser, with December sales dropping 24 percent from last year." 2
